Post by Donal McKennaI have always been under the impression that Brady is an Irish name.
However, I have heard others say that Brady is very definately Scottish.
Please advise.

BRADY:
The surname derives from the Irish Mac Bradaigh, coming, possibly, from
bradach, meaning 'thieving' or 'dishonest'. The name is among the sixty
most frequently found in Ireland, and remains very numerous in Co Cavan,
their original homeland, with large numbers also to be found in the
adjoining county of Monaghan. Their power was centered on an area a few
miles east of Cavan town, from where they held jurisdiction over a large
territory within the old Gaelic kingdom of Breifne.

Mac Bhradaigh Brady, Grady "spirited"
--------------
The leading family in Co.Clare gradually changed their name
from O'Grady to Brady so that the Bradys of east Clare are in reality
O'Gradys.
------------
The clans in the counties of Cavan and Leitrim, not given by O'Dugan, are
from other sources: 14. MacBradaigh or MacBrady, was a very ancient and
important family in Cavan; they were, according to MacGeoghagan, a branch of
the O'Carrolls #, chiefs of Calry.
----------------------------
Ancient Brefney bore the name of Hy Briuin Breifne,
from its being possessed by the race of Brian, King of Connaught, in the
fourth century, brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages, and son of Eochy
Moyvane, Monarch of Ireland from A.D. 357 to 365, and of the race of
Heremon. That Brian had twenty-four sons, whose posterity possessed the
greater part of Connaught and were called the "Hy-Briuin race." Of this race
were the O'Connors, kings of Connaught; O'Rourke, O'Rielly, MacDermott,
MacDonogh, O'Flaherty, O'Malley, MacOiraghty (MacGeraghty, or Geraghty),
O'Fallon, O'Flynn (of Connaught), MacGauran, MacTiernan, MacBrady or Brady,
etc.

# O'Carroll: According to the De La Ponce MSS.,
"O'Carroll" of Calry, has been modernized MacBrady.
